How to disable "Seen" feature in Facebook chats

Facebook has introduced read receipts a few years ago now. By read receipts, I mean the little “seen” word that appears in a chat box when you see the message from your friend. Those read receipts can be very annoying, especially when you don’t want to let your friends know you have read their messages. Fortunately, there are a couple of workarounds you can use. In this post, we are going to see three different ways to get rid of those read receipts.

Solution 1

The first solution is the easiest one. We will simply use an external extension to do this. You need to be with the Google Chrome browser and download the Unseen extension. So, it will block all seen requests so the seen message won’t be visible to others.

Solution 2

The second option still use an external application, but this time, the application will work with Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer. Install the Chat Undetected app.

Solution 3

The last but not the least option involve a bit more work than the two others, but nothing big. First you need to install the AdBlock Plus  extension, which is working for (almost) all browsers. Then, open the extension and add the following line to the custom filter:
facebook.com/ajax/mercury/change_read_status.php$xmlhttprequest
It will block all read requests from being sent, so other users won’t have the read receipt.
